Evaluation: 3. What Have You Learned From Your Audience Feedback?

When it came to the audience feedback, I wanted to know what they liked about the film, disliked and what could be improved.

The first question that I asked was what they like about the film, and it was said that they liked how they understood the setting of the film, including the time period which was reflected in the clothing that they wore, e.g the dream sequence taking place in the 1920s as well as the beginning of the film taking place in the 1940s,  Also, they understood the theme of the film and how it related to the narrative as well, with how it all fit together, i.e the dream taking place in the 1920s because of the fact that she had been reading a book before she fell asleep which was also set in this particular time period as well.

When asking about feedback on the parts of the film that they didn't like, it was said that there was a certain part of the film which looked and felt as though it was forced. This meant that the way I directed the scene could have been better to make it be less forced so that it would seem more natural and go with the flow of the film and it would come across this way in the final version of the film as well.

The main improvement that was suggested was to have more title cards used so that the viewer could understand what was being said, rather than not knowing what is being said due to the music playing on top and the fact that it is a silent film. The intention that I had was for the title cards to have the main dialogue that appeared to be important and stand out, which other silent films did at the time as they had title cards which also had dialogue which was important.

I have learned that including more title cards would be useful to an audience who haven't watched a silent film before, and aren't used to not hearing the dialogue being spoken, rather than just seeing it appear on a title card and not many appear to a certain extent.There is also the way I have shot certain scenes which look forced and that could be improved if I either filmed it differently at the time with realizing this or even editing it so that it wouldn't look this way.

Inital Ideas on Cinematography/Mise-en-scene

My initial ideas on the mise-en-scene varied in the beginning due to me not knowing what my initial idea would be for my short film. But once I came to the final decision, I knew what was needed and began to plan and get them together.

Props:

• For my props, I was interested in looking at an old briefcase that looked as though it had already been used. and luckily I had found one and was able to use it for my work. The reason why I wanted one of these, was because of the backstory to what is currently happening. The briefcase was to represent that she would soon be leaving and her belongings were already packed away, so that she was prepared to leave the next day. 
• The other prop was The |Great Gatsby Book. The main character is going to be reading this book, as it also has a link to her dream which is set in the 1920's.

Props

Location:

• One of the main locations that I had in mind for when it came to filming was the Pier. I already had this in mind for another idea, but once I began to work around it and soon I was able to fit it into this idea as one of the settings.
• The next location was a bedroom. I aimed to make the room look simple and attempt to resemble the time that the film is going to be set in. 
• For only a brief time, there is a scene in a pub. This would be located at the bar, as the image that I had in mind is that this were the main character first appears in her dreams and then would see her friends for the first time, before they end up going outside to the pier.

Costume:

• The beginning of the film is set in the 1940's, so the main character is going to be wearing simple pajamas that are plain.
• The rest of the film takes places in the 1920's, so I decided that because she was reading The Great Gatsby before hand, that the characters would wear stylish clothing. The main character wearing a flapper dress, while her friends wear smart clothing.

Lighting:

• The lighting would be adjusted to the right tone, so that it isn't either too dark or too light. But so that it look even and resembles other silent films and the tones of their lighting.
